Wycombe High School marked its 125th anniversary with a spectacular Community Carnival, bringing together more than 2,500 students, staff, families, alumnae and members of the wider community for a day of celebration in glorious sunshine.

The free event formed the centrepiece of the anniversary programme, transforming the school site into a vibrant festival filled with live music, dance performances, sports activities, games, stalls, food vendors and arts and crafts. Student leaders, teachers, support staff and volunteers all played their part in creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere, reflecting the strong sense of community that has defined the school since it opened in 1901.

Headteacher Nicola Renyard described the occasion as a fitting celebration of the school’s milestone, highlighting the importance of bringing together past and present members of the Wycombe High community. Former students spanning several decades returned to reconnect with friends, revisit familiar spaces and see how the school has developed over time, while current students showcased their talents through a wide range of performances and activities.

Alongside the carnival, alumnae were also drawn to a special archive display in the school library, which offered a meaningful way to engage with the school’s history. Created by archivists Jill Boyd and Hilary Brash, the display brought together 125 years of material, including yearbooks, photographs and log books. The exhibition prompted reflection and conversation, allowing former students to rediscover memories and explore the experiences of earlier generations.

While the archive display formed a smaller element of the day, it added depth to the celebrations, complementing the energy of the carnival by providing a tangible link to the school’s past. Together, the events highlighted both the enduring traditions and the vibrant present of Wycombe High School.

Recently judged Outstanding by Ofsted, with its Sixth Form described as a “beacon of excellence”, Wycombe High continues to build on its long history of achievement. The 125th anniversary celebrations not only honoured that legacy but also reinforced the strong community spirit that remains at the heart of the school today.
